Door to the Clay Class 2011
environmental installation, including house, door, furniture, clay, air humidifiers

About "Door to the Clay Class"
A door inside a public building announcing access to a clay class. Inside, the humidity is stifling. The place is both specific and interchangeable. The figurines have been made by architects. The character of the visitor, his visit to the site (coming from the street, opening the door, entering the room, …), and the promise of the site are part of the work's semantic system. This work has been deliberately conceived as a work within a so-called open air exhibition.

Main installation of the exhibition:

Announcements 2010
Large-scale installation: wood, 100 ink-jet prints on paper, metal, bleach
1200 x 1200 x 240 cm

Other works shown in the exhibition are Untitled (installation, 2010) and Double Calling (photograph, 2010).
A young man performs cleaning of the floor with bleach, 3 times during the exhibition.

About "Announcements"

A structure consisting of twelve wooden boards on stilts zigzagging throughout the whole exhibition space, forming a "U". The visitor can walk all around this "U".
About 100 prints are (permanently) pasted up on both sides of the boards. These prints are 1:1 reproductions of a series of about 50 drawings especially made for this installation, which means that most of them appear multiplied two ore more times.

The setting reminds the announcement boards in the entry area of city halls, with the posters of the political candidates of a forthcoming election, announcements of events and so on. But if one tries to develop this analogy in greater detail, one gets stuck. And whoever begins this to read as an exhibition of drawings (objects of art being displayed on a movable display not being part of the work of art) will get stuck very soon, too. In fact, the multiplied copies and the missing of any "original", and the "improper" way of "hanging", the missing of any first- and (especially) second-degree storyline or "artistic will of expression", demands some refocusing by the visitor based on his self-awareness, wants he further penetrate the work.
"Announcements" as a whole is a display-machine, a medium as the message if you will, not as some self-sufficient statement, but as just one amongst many other (sociological, linguistic ...) findings and interests within this work (the operating of the installation as a whole and in its parts, and also of the individual drawings). Announcements are already before they become occupied by official language. With regard to the city hall analogy, I realized that (even abstract) mimesis of official language was not enough. I felt the necessity for using "minor", "unofficial" language.

Robert Estermann – Sissy Circus and other Singularities

"Often crossing different media (photography, video, drawing, and poetics), Robert Estermann is able to tease out the subtle nuances inherent in his subject matter, to produce work of extraordinary beauty, simplicity, and sensuality. Moreover, he is able to do this in a rather unique way, combining a certain kind of modesty with forceful insight."
Sue Golding, Philosopher and artist

In this exhibition “Sissy Circus and Other Singularities”, a broad range of different works from the past three years of Robert Estermann were exhibited, which “singularities” was used as a description by himself.

There are over 30 pieces of artworks including drawings, video, photos and installation are exhibited. The artist makes use of his drawing “Sissy Circus” to inspire the fantasy of a fictional circus. Integrated with a selection, mostly from the past three years, of different works which the artist refers to “Singularities”, the exhibition conveys a unique network of the surprising, the playful, the elegant, the minimal, and the seemingly child-like but also cunning. In his practice, the artist refuses a simple set of codes, but instead seeks to “explore, inhabit and celebrate the degrees of grey in reality“.

PRESS RELEASE french (original) | deutsch / english (text only)

My works in this exhibition, my drawings in particular, are prophecies, little crystals, savant points. They read the clouds, almost classical alphabets and then the clouds again. They believe that matter is information and that it exceeds all prophecies. They change matter through information. They have bodies of all ages, colors and sexes. They believe that miracles are  the ordinary of the possible, and that if art is punk it is because its happening is ordinary and miraculous, everywhere and specific at the exact same time. They like too to trick in order to survive, to fight exclusion, to play. They read the angles of the waves and surf their tunnels. They play in shapes, the ocean and the optimism of the modern. They say: The waters of the ocean got new tastes.
